There are Young Carers in every country looking after someone in their family who has an illness or a disability or other condition. Around the world there are a range of recognised terms and definitions including young caregivers, caregiving youth and more. 

'....a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person (of any age, except where that care is provided for payment, pursuant to a contract or as voluntary work).’

 

(Children and Families Act 2014 S96)

 

This relates to care for any family member, or other, who is physically or mentally ill, frail elderly, disabled or misuses alcohol or substances. 

 

Young Adult Carers are considered to be young people aged 16-24 years

Who are Young Carers? 

Young carers are children and young people first and should be free to develop emotionally and physically and to take full advantage of opportunities for educational achievement and life success.
